Fire Cider

Cold and Flu Season is upon us.
How can we help our body to remain healthier during
this season?  One recipe that our family uses
as a preventive measure and as a remedy during illness
is Fire Cider.

Fire Cider is a lovely, spicy drink made with several ingredients
that build the immune system as well as fight against
viral and bacterial infections.

"Fire Cider" is a term that renowned herbalist
Rosemary Gladstar
made popular through her many books, classes,
herb courses and teachings.

The basic recipe includes:
Apple Cider Vinegar (with the mother)
Ginger, Hot Peppers, Onions,  Garlic,
Horseradish and Honey.
However, there are other ingredients that can be added
that have cold/flu fighting properties.

Let's look at some ingredients:

 Apple Cider Vinegar
We are talking about raw, organic ACV with the 'mother'.
ACV is full of vitamins and trace minerals!
It helps support the systems of the body in a variety of ways.
ACV supports the immune system, helps with digestion,
eases allergies, can help lower blood pressure and
cholesterol as well as help with diabetes.
These are just a few things to mention about the
wonderful health benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar.
My first preference of ACV is Braggs.  However,
I have found other raw, organic ACV brands that are
good as well.
There are many, many great books to read to learn
more about ACV.  I do suggest that
Paul & Patricia Bragg are the true experts
when it comes to Apple Cider Vinegar!

Freshly Dug Horseradish!
Pungent and Powerful!
I LOVE Growing Herbs!
It is wonderful to be able to grow the foods,
herbs, and roots to have on hand for medicinal preparations.
Horseradish is powerful medicine!
It is great for all things sinus!  It opens up the sinus
passages and loosens up mucus which helps with drainage.
Horseradish kills infection!
It is an antibacterial, antibiotic, anti-inflammatory,
antioxidant, antiseptic, diaphoretic, diuretic,
expectorant and a stimulant for the immune and gastric
systems.
Bam!  Need I say more!

Basic Fire Cider Recipe
Yield: 1 Quart
1/4 C Grated Ginger Root
1/2 C Grated Horseradish
1 Medium Onion Chopped
10 Cloves Garlic Chopped
2 or 3 Cayenne Peppers Chopped
1/4 tsp Powdered Cayenne
Prepare roots/fruits/herbs.  Place in quart jar.
Cover with Apple Cider Vinegar.
Use a piece of parchment paper under the lid so the
vinegar will not touch the metal.  Or, use a plastic lid.
Set in dark, cool place for a month.
Shake daily.
After one month, use cheesecloth to strain pulp.
Pour Vinegar into a clean jar.
Add Honey to taste.
Other ingredients may be added when making Fire Cider.
I like to add herbs such as Rosemary and Sage.  I also like
to add Tumeric Powder.  Another ingredient I add is
dried Elderberries.
Be creative.  Add any ingredient that you know is
a helpful remedy for colds and flu.
Dose:  1 T of Fire Cider can be taken daily as a preventive
and during an illness.
